Quarterbacks might miss out if selected in the 2024 NFL Draft’s first round…

As many as five quarterbacks might be chosen in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, which takes place in Detroit from April 25–27. It’s unlikely that any of them will succeed.

In fact, it’s safe to argue that just six ogreer seven clubs selected the correct quarterback after looking at the NFL careers of fifteen first-round choices during the previous five years.

Note: Dwayne Haskins, the 2019 Commanders pick, passed away in a dump truck accident in 2022; we did not review his candidacy.

In light of this, the first-round quarterbacks selected since 2019 are listed below, along with a grade derived from the way their careers have developed.

The Cardinals made the smart decision to select Murray instead of Josh Rosen after only one season. Although the franchise is currently going through yet another rebuilding phase, Murray, a two-time Pro Bowler, is by no means a flop. Murray has only made one playoff appearance, but given his brilliance since returning from an ACL rupture in 2022, it might not be too long until he helps Arizona make it again to the postseason.

One of the more unexpected selections in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones struggled early in his career with injuries, turmoil, and head coach changes. After guiding New York to the postseason in 2022, he inked a four-year, $160 million contract; but, due to his lackluster play and an ACL rupture that ended his season in 2023, the organization may have to choose his replacement in this year’s NFL Draft.

Although Burrow has suffered two season-ending injuries to start his career, it’s clear the Bengals made the right choice by selecting the former Heisman Trophy winner. Burrow, the only active QB to beat Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs, has already led Cincinnati to one Super Bowl appearance and when healthy is in the conversation for being a top-three quarterback.

It’s reasonable to argue that Tagovailoa wasn’t worth being taken fifth overall, even if he has established himself as one of the NFL’s most accurate quarterbacks, especially in light of guys at his position who were drafted after him (Justin Herbert, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts). Tagovailoa has to demonstrate that he can win important games in spite of his shaky arm strength and limited mobility in order to get a big contract extension.

The decision by Green Bay to choose the franchise’s quarterback of the future on draft night, rather than giving Aaron Rodgers another weapon to prepare for a possible Super Bowl run, surprised a lot of people. Love performed admirably in his first season as a starter in 2023 after trailing Rodgers for three years. He led the Packers to the NFC divisional round and was second in the NFL in touchdown passes (32) and passing yards (4,159).
