The University of South Dakota (USD) Coyotes football team has reached a historic milestone in their program’s legacy, advancing to the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) semifinals for the first time in school history. This achievement follows an extraordinary season that saw the Coyotes claim a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) championship, solidifying their status as one of the top teams in the nation.
The 2024 season has been one of resilience, determination, and consistent excellence for the Coyotes. Led by head coach Bob Nielson, the team entered the season with high expectations but exceeded even the most optimistic projections. The Coyotes showcased a balanced attack on offense, combining an efficient passing game with a powerful ground attack, while their defense was a formidable force, shutting down some of the best offenses in the MVFC.
Earning a share of the MVFC title was no small feat. The conference is widely regarded as one of the most competitive in the FCS, home to perennial powerhouses like North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The Coyotes stood tall against these rivals, securing key victories and finishing the regular season with a remarkable record. This strong performance earned USD a high seed in the FCS playoffs, giving them a direct path to the quarterfinals.
In the playoffs, the Coyotes continued to shine. Their quarterfinal matchup against a Big Sky Conference opponent was a showcase of their dominance on both sides of the ball. The team executed flawlessly, with quarterback Aidan Bouman leading the offense and the defense delivering critical stops. The victory not only secured their place in the semifinals but also cemented their reputation as a serious contender for the national championship.
Looking ahead, the Coyotes face a daunting challenge in the semifinals as they take on No. 1 Montana State. The Bobcats, known for their high-powered offense and physical style of play, represent the toughest test yet for USD. However, the Coyotes have proven they belong among the FCS elite, and their confidence is at an all-time high.
This historic run has electrified USD fans and brought national attention to the program. Regardless of the outcome in the semifinals, the Coyotes have already etched their name in the history books, making 2024 a season to remember.
