Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, who sustained a left ankle injury during the December 15 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, is expected to play in the upcoming matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, December 21. Watt’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter while attempting to sack Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. He exited the game after recording two sacks, a forced fumble, and seven tackles. Post-game X-rays were negative, and he was diagnosed with a low-ankle sprain.
Throughout the week, Watt’s participation in practice has been encouraging. He missed Tuesday’s session but returned on Wednesday as a limited participant, engaging in individual drills. By Thursday, he was a full participant, indicating significant progress in his recovery. Notably, Watt carries no injury designation into the game against the Ravens, suggesting he is poised to play.
When asked about his status, Watt expressed optimism but remained non-committal, stating, “We’ll have to see Saturday, but I feel pretty good right now.” This cautious approach is understandable, given the physical demands of his position and the importance of his role in the Steelers’ defense.
Watt’s presence is crucial for the Steelers as they prepare to face the Ravens in a pivotal AFC North matchup. With 11.5 sacks this season, Watt leads the team and has achieved double-digit sacks for the sixth time in his eight-year NFL career. His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks and disrupt offensive plays is a significant asset to Pittsburgh’s defense.
The Steelers are currently leading the AFC North with a 10-4 record, while the Ravens are close behind. A victory on Saturday would solidify Pittsburgh’s position atop the division and enhance their playoff prospects. Watt’s participation could be a determining factor in the game’s outcome, given his track record of impactful performances.
In addition to Watt, the Steelers have been monitoring other key players’ health. Wide receiver George Pickens, who leads the team with 55 receptions, 850 yards, and three touchdown catches, has missed the past two games due to a hamstring injury and did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. His status for the upcoming game remains uncertain. Backup quarterback Justin Fields also missed practice due to a hamstring issue.
The Steelers’ defense will need to be at its best to contain the Ravens’ offense, and having Watt on the field would provide a significant boost. His leadership and playmaking abilities are integral to the team’s success, and his return would be a welcome development for Pittsburgh fans.
As game time approaches, all indications point to Watt being ready to contribute. However, final decisions will depend on pre-game evaluations and any potential setbacks. The Steelers’ coaching and medical staff will undoubtedly prioritize Watt’s long-term health while considering the immediate importance of the upcoming divisional clash.
