Pastor John MacArthur, a widely respected evangelical leader and senior pastor of Grace Community Church in California, recently provided an update on his health struggles during an October 2024 church service. Over the past two years, MacArthur has faced a series of significant medical challenges, including heart surgeries and lung complications, which have greatly affected his ability to preach regularly. MacArthur’s health issues began in early 2023, when breathing difficulties led to medical intervention. Doctors discovered severe heart complications, resulting in the placement of four stents in his arteries. While this initial procedure was successful, further complications arose. Later, MacArthur required an aortic valve replacement through a minimally invasive catheterization procedure, which also proved successful. However, recovery from these operations was prolonged, and breathing problems persisted due to recurring fluid buildup in his lungs.
The fluid required five aspirations before doctors concluded that surgery was necessary. In late 2024, MacArthur underwent lung surgery to seal leaks and alleviate his breathing difficulties. While the operation was successful, he described the recovery process as particularly taxing, noting that healing his lungs was slow and required patience. “It’s been a long siege of not breathing normally,” MacArthur remarked, highlighting the physical and emotional toll the experience has taken on him.
Gratitude Amidst Trials
Throughout his health journey, MacArthur has remained optimistic and deeply thankful. Speaking to his congregation, he emphasized that his trials have strengthened his faith and gratitude toward God. “I’m thankful because it’s in the trials, when you’re face-to-face with things you can’t control, that your faith is tested,” he said. MacArthur has consistently viewed his hardships as opportunities to witness God’s providence and glory, adding that such challenges often yield spiritual growth in ways that comfort and ease cannot.
He also expressed gratitude for the medical care he received, humorously noting, “I was fine until I hit 84, and then I went off a cliff.” Despite his struggles, MacArthur maintains his characteristic wit and humility, ensuring his congregation that he is at peace with God’s will for his life.
A Gradual Return to Ministry
While MacArthur has yet to resume regular preaching duties, he has made occasional appearances at Grace Community Church. His return to the pulpit for special events, such as a Thanksgiving service, has been met with overwhelming support.
