Mike Westhoff, the assistant head coach of the Denver Broncos, recently declared his resignation after the team’s narrow 16-14 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs. Westhoff, recognized as a legendary special teams coach, mentioned health issues tied to vision problems as the reason behind his choice. The 76-year-old coach, who had earlier retired following an extensive career with the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, came on board with the Broncos in 2023 at the urging of head coach Sean Payton.
Westhoff observed problems with his vision weeks prior to resigning, yet he persisted in coaching despite the difficulties. Following the latest Chiefs game, he sought medical advice and determined it was time to place his health first. Payton reported that Westhoff had “blurriness in one eye,” and after medical evaluations, doctors advised him to lower his stress levels, influencing his choice to resign.
Westhoff’s impact in Denver has been significant, as he and special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica developed one of the league’s highest-performing special teams units. With his direction, the Broncos recorded multiple league-best statistics in 2023, such as placing 21 punts within the rival’s 20-yard line. His exit creates a gap in the coaching staff, but the groundwork he contributed to remains a valuable resource for the team.
This resignation occurs during a period when the Broncos are striving for a playoff spot. Although the defeat to the Chiefs was disappointing, Payton continues to be hopeful about the team’s prospects. He commended Westhoff for his commitment and highlighted the beneficial effect he had during his brief time. Currently, while the Broncos adapt to his absence, they strive to continue fostering his legacy and target a strong conclusion to their season.
