Before perfecting his skills, Phil Collins was immersed in the sounds of legendary artists. Many of his influences—excluding The Beatles—brought elements of soul, jazz, and Motown into modern music, such as the lesser-known London band the Action and jazz drummer Buddy Rich. Despite being surrounded by so many greats, there was one artist above all that he wished he could have collaborated with.

 

In rock music, progressive rock bears a closer resemblance to jazz than most other genres. From a young age, Collins trained in rudimental drumming under Lloyd Ryan and Frank King, emphasizing that “in any kind of funk or jazz drumming, the rudiments are always there.”
