Dallas Cowboys: An NFL insider makes a dire prediction about the extension of Dak Prescott’s contract

The upcoming season for the Dallas Cowboys has the potential to be one of the most significant in the team’s recent history. Owner Jerry Jones has decided not to extend the contract of head coach Mike McCarthy, who is about to enter his final year. Put another way, McCarthy will be searching for a new position in 2025 if he doesn’t help Dallas make a sustained run in the NFL Playoffs. It’s just not good enough that he has a 1-3 postseason record since taking the helm as head coach of the Cowboys.

Three of Dallas’ best players—wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, linebacker Micah Parsons, and quarterback Dak Prescott—need to work out contract extensions. Because quarterbacks are becoming more and more important in the NFL, the Cowboys have stated that they are giving Prescott’s contract priority over the other two huge contracts.

However, one NFL insider has warned fans who are hoping for a solution to be reached not to hold their breath.

The truth is that Prescott will become a free agent and probably wear a new uniform in 2025 if the Cowboys and him are unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension this summer.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport recently expressed agreement with this sentiment, saying:

“The contract is a big deal. As it stands right now, Dak Prescott heading into the final year of his contract with the kind of leverage that we have rarely seen a quarterback have. the Cowboys cannot trade him, they cannot franchise him. If they don’t do a deal with him, he’s going to be a free agent.

“Will he sign with the Cowboys after they let him be a free agent? I guess anything’s possible but certainly hard to imagine there.”

The near future of the team would suffer greatly if Prescott is not signed to a deal. A consistent Pro Bowl quarterback and NFL MVP contender is difficult to replace (unless you’re the Green Bay Packers, who spend years training their next QB).

Dallas will eventually, very soon, have to decide if they should give Prescott what he wants or begin preparing for life without him. This can entail coming to an understanding with Lamb, who is holding out until his new contract is finalized.

Lamb would, at the very least, provide the incoming quarterback with an elite wide receiver to pass to.
