Breaking: Chiefs, a wide receiver just released, will be signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers

A wide receiver that was just cut by the Kansas City Chiefs is being signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After the wide receiver position had a poor OTAs performance, the Steelers have now made a few roster changes this week.

Earlier this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut a wide receiver.
Earlier in the week, the Steelers cut loose Denzel Mims, a former second-round choice of the New York Jets. A day later, Mims would sign a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. As was previously mentioned on GH, Mims was one of several wide receivers the Steelers were attempting to fit into the WR2 spot during OTAs, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic:

In the voluntary phase of the off-season, the Steelers have not emerged with a clear choice for their No. 2 receiver. Van Jefferson, in his opinion, is currently the second best choice:

Van Jefferson is my current choice, but you may also include Watkins, Patterson, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Marquez Callaway, and Denzel Mimsin. Let’s be honest. Yes, the Steelers are aware that the scenario is not favorable. If they don’t add a legitimate No. 2 before the season begins, it will be evident that they lack awareness and urgency. And I believe that they will.

The Steelers are expected to add more help at receiver in free agency or trade. San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk is fans and analysts’ favorite target for the Steelers.

The Steelers signed a WR who was with the Chiefs this spring

The Steelers announced on their website that they had signed Jacob Copeland to a one-year contract, filling Mims’ roster slot. Copeland was a member of the Steelers practice squad in 2023.

After the 2023 NFL Draft, Copeland signed a contract as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans. After being cut loose by the Titans, he signed a training camp contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Before the regular season began, Copeland was released. During the offseason, he also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Copeland played at the University of Maryland in 2022 where he caught 26 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns. He spent four seasons at the University of Florida where he had 86 receptions for 1,366 yards and nine touchdowns.

Copeland was released by the Chiefs in early May, before mandatory minicamp. Copeland has experience with the Steelers but none with the current group of quarterbacks. Copeland will receive passes from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in training camp instead of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky.
