Report: The 770-yard wide receiver for the New York Giants may be demoted

When the NFL training camp for the New York Giants opens next month, there will be a lot of battles to be fought for. New York had a 6-11 record at the end of the previous season, missing out on the NFL postseason. The Giants finished third in the NFC East division last season, for some reason.

A season ago, the New York Giants scored 15.6 points on average per game. Although their net passing average was only 169.8, they managed to average 110.2 yards a game on the ground. This season, the squad will use a running back by committee scheme as Saquon Barkley is no longer with them.

This will be year three of the Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen regime. The New York Giants are still rebuilding this roster and will see what the 2024 season brings.

Over the last few years. Darius Slayton has been one of the most consistent wide receivers on the New York Giants roster. Slayton last season for the Giants had 50 receptions for 770 yards receiving and four touchdowns, along with averaging 15.4 yards per reception. He also was targeted 79 times.

At the start of the offseason, Darius Slayton held out because he wanted a new contract, but he reported to the mandatory workouts. Stephen Samra of gmenhq.com said about Slayton:

“When the Giants drafted Malik Nabers, the writing was on the wall for Darius Slayton. He likely would no longer be the team’s top receiving choice, after fighting his way into the good graces of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen over the last couple of seasons.

Outside of Nabers, the future of the Giants receiving corps is clear — the former LSU star will lead the way, with Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt filling the gaps. That leaves a limited amount of playing time for Slayton, maybe not in 2024, but beyond, it becomes murkier with each season.

Over the last week, while Nabers was making highlight-reel catches, Slayton was sitting on the sidelines, after suffering an apparent injury on Tuesday. The best ability is availability, and Slayton wasn’t able to practice, and was forced to watch the new Giants trio go viral for their head-turning plays in the meantime.

Alas, Slayton could very well shock Giants fans once again, and pace the team’s wide receiving corps. However, with as much talent as New York has added to the group over the last year and change, he’ll be hard pressed to do so. With that, his stock is falling, even if it’s not particularly anything he could help.”
